In today’s global market, product quality and safety are critical. for electronic and IT products in India. Compliance with regulated standards is not optional – It’s mandatory. The Bureau of Indian Standards operates several certification schemes, one of which is the Compulsory Registration Scheme. If you are a manufacturer or importer aiming to enter the Indian market with certain types of products, BIS CRS registration is a non-negotiable step.
In this blog, we’ll break down everything you need to know about BIS CRS registration – what it is, who needs it, how to get it, and why it matters.
What is BIS Certification
BIS Certification is a quality management system operated by the Bureau of Indian Standards, which is the national standards body of India. The system guarantees that the product conforms to Indian Standards with regard to safety, quality, and performance.
Whether BIS certification is voluntary or mandatory is determined by whether the product falls under a Quality Control Order (QCO). BIS certification is compulsory for car rims based on government notifications.

Understanding CRS
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) by BIS ensures that certain electronic and IT products meet Indian safety standards before being sold or imported. Launched under MeitY’s 2012 order, CRS covers items like mobile phones, laptops, LEDs, and more. Manufacturers must test their products in BIS-approved labs in India and register each model. Foreign brands must appoint an Authorised Indian Representative (AIR). Once approved, products must carry the BIS Standard Mark with a unique R-number. Non-compliance can lead to import bans or penalties. ELT Corporate provides complete support for CRS registration and compliance.
